Zambia Commemorates 2026 International Nurses Day

The 2026 International Nurses Day commemoration came alive with colour, pride and unity as nurses and midwives marched from the University of Zambia to Mulungushi Conference Centre, led by the Zambia Army Band in a spirited Match Past that symbolised the dedication and resilience of the nursing profession.

The Match Past was officially flagged off by Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Eng. Joe Kalusa, representing Provincial Minister Hon. Sheal Mulyata, together with ZUNMO President Mr. Fray Michelo. The event later culminated in a memorable awards presentation recognising outstanding contributions by nurses and midwives to healthcare delivery in Zambia.

Held under the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” the commemoration brought together Government officials, healthcare leaders, training institutions, cooperating partners and nurses from across the country in celebrating the backbone of Zambia’s health system. Similar commemorations have also held across all the 10 provinces of Zambia, with Lusaka Province hosting the main national event.

Representing the Republican Vice President, Hon. Dr. Alex Katakwe, Minister of Health, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening nursing and midwifery through continued recruitment, improved working conditions, provision of uniforms, leadership development and enhanced training opportunities.

Speaking during the event, ZUNMO President Mr. Fray Michelo emphasized that empowered nurses and midwives are central to achieving quality healthcare, Universal Health Coverage and stronger communities, while calling for sustained investment in the profession.

International Nurses Day 2026 is not only a celebration, but also a powerful reminder of the compassion, sacrifice and unwavering service nurses and midwives continue to provide every day across Zambia.
