AFRICAN LEADERS AND HEALTH EXPERTS CONVENE IN GHANA TO ADDRESS GROWING HEALTH WORKFORCE CHALLENGES

African Heads of Government, policymakers, health experts, development partners, and health worker representatives have convened in Accra, Ghana, for the 2nd Africa Health Workforce Investment Forum taking place from 6th to 8th May 2026.

Held under the theme “Africa’s Health Workforce: From Words to Action – Plan. Train. Retain,” the high-level forum is focusing on practical solutions to Africa’s growing health workforce challenges, including shortages, migration, unemployment, retention, training, and improved working conditions for health professionals across the continent.

The Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation (ZUNMO) President, who is also African Nurses and Midwives Confederation (ANMC) Secretary General, Fray Michelo, is among participants contributing to discussions aimed at strengthening investment in health workforce education, employment, and sustainability.

Organised by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa together with key partners, the forum is expected to produce the Accra Declaration, outlining collective commitments and actionable steps towards building resilient and adequately supported health systems in Africa.

ZUNMO’s participation, through the ANMC, reflects Zambia’s continued commitment to contributing to regional and continental efforts aimed at improving healthcare delivery through a stronger and motivated health workforce.
