The ZUNO Team, led by President-Elect Mr. Fray Michelo, conducted a comprehensive visit to the Heroes Stadium, designated as a Cholera Treatment Center in response to the surge in cholera cases in Lusaka.
Over a five-hour interaction with on-site healthcare providers, working in the triage section, female, male, and pediatric wards, helped ZUNO appreciate the efforts as well as challenges being faced by the nurses and midwives in conducting their work at the Cholera Treatment Center.
During interactions with the Nurses and Midwives, Mr. Michelo emphasized on the importance of continuing to provide quality healthcare despite the increasing cholera cases.
Mr. Michelo stated that the visit was aimed at giving encouragement and expressing solidarity with Nurses and Midwives at the cholera center.

The President-elect also engaged in a brief conversation with the Minister of Health, Ms. Sylvia Masebo, who was present on the premises to check on the management and coordination at the treatment center.
The Government through Ministry of Health designated Heroes Stadium as a Cholera Treatment Center on 4 January 2024, after cases surged further increasing demand nursing and midwifery services.
Having a large surge of patients as a result of an outbreak puts a stress on the entire health care system especially nurses and midwives whose role changes to adapt to the needs of the patient, their families, and the health center in general.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has presented a memento to Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation (ZUNO) in recognition of 2020 as the year of the Nurse and Midwife and the role the ZUNO played in supporting nurses during
ICN memento in form of a unique coin and certificate presented to ZUNO recognizing 2020 designated as Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

In a letter addressed to the ZUNO President Tisa Chiponda, ICN President Annette Kennedy, stated that the Covid 19 pandemic has shown the benefits of working together, sharing information and supporting each other.
The Memento in form of a unique coin and certificate was designed specially by one of ICNs’ past Board members, Kallooa Bagooaduth, a nurse and recognised artist in Mauritius.
The ICN President noted that although Covid 19 pandemic denied the nurses to commemorate the year 2020, the ICN could not let the designated year fade without acknowledging, not only the difficult year for nurses and midwives, but also remember nursing colleagues who lost their lives in the pandemic.
She said “The power is in strength of unity and purpose.” adding that nurses need to keep up the momentum in order to compel policy makers to invest in nursing and improve pay conditions.
And acknowledging receipt of the memento, the ZUNO President thanked ICN on behalf of Nurses and Midwives in Zambia. Mrs. Chiponda expressed gratitude stating that the memento is very significant and a reminder of unity exhibited by nurses and midwives during a very difficult time.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) designated the year 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife” which also happened to be the Bicentenary of Florence Nightingale, the architect of modern nursing.

The conference that commenced with the arrival and registration of delegates, followed by pre-conference engagements and the ANMC Annual General Meeting, set the tone for strategic reflection, governance strengthening, and alignment on the future direction of the Confederation.
The official opening ceremony, held on 4th March 2026, was graced by Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa, MP, Acting Minister of Health of Zambia, who reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening the nursing and midwifery workforce as a cornerstone of resilient health systems.
The conference featured strong representation from both continental and global leadership. José Luis Cobos Serrano, President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), delivered a powerful address and later presented a keynote on “The Digital Future: Nurse Preparedness and Impact on Care,” highlighting the importance of innovation and digital transformation in healthcare delivery.
The keynote address during the opening ceremony was delivered by Ms. Daphne Shamambo, Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services in Zambia, who emphasized the need for harmonised standards, strengthened research capacity, and continuous professional development to elevate practice across the continent.
Goodwill messages from partners, including the World Health Organization and Public Services International, reinforced the importance of collaboration in advancing the nursing and midwifery agenda in Africa.
Under the theme:“Harmonizing Standards, Elevating Practice: A Unified Approach to Nursing and Midwifery Excellence in Africa,”delegates engaged in rich discussions across a range of critical areas, including:
Strengthening health systems through research and evidence-based practice
Improving maternal, newborn, and child health outcomes
Leadership and advocacy in nursing and midwifery
Digital health and innovation
Regulatory excellence and workforce wellbeing
The scientific programme featured abstract presentations from multiple African countries, reflecting a growing body of locally generated evidence aimed at addressing the continent’s health challenges.
Throughout the conference, a strong spirit of unity and collaboration was evident. Delegates shared experiences, built networks, and explored opportunities for cross-border partnerships in education, research, and professional development.
In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Fray Michelo, Secretary General of ANMC and President of ZUNMO, described the conference as a reflection of the Confederation’s vision of building a unified and influential nursing and midwifery community in Africa.
Similarly, Mr. Justus Cherop, President of ANMC, emphasized the importance of collective action in strengthening professional standards and advancing healthcare delivery across the continent.

In his address, the Minister welcomed delegates from across Africa and commended ANMC for selecting Zambia as host of this important continental meeting. The Minister emphasized the importance of harmonizing nursing and midwifery standards across Africa, strengthening professional leadership, improving education and training, and investing in human resources for health. He also highlighted the need for stronger cross-country collaboration in research, regulatory frameworks, and digital health integration to address Africa’s evolving health challenges.
Reaffirming Zambia’s commitment to advancing the profession, the Government pledged continued support for nursing and midwifery education, regulatory reforms, research, and leadership development within the health sector.

Mr. Daniel Oberko, Regional Secretary for Africa and Arab Countries at Public Services International, highlighted the critical role of collective action and solidarity among health workers in strengthening healthcare systems and improving working conditions for nurses and midwives.
Addressing delegates, Mr. Justus Cherop, President of the African Nurses and Midwives Confederation and President of the Ugandan Nurses and Midwives Union, called for stronger collaboration among national associations to harmonize professional standards and promote evidence-based practice across Africa.
