The nursing and midwifery fraternity through the Triad, wishes to express their deepest heartfelt condolences to the Kaunda family and the entire nation following the passing of the founding father of our great nation, the first Republican President of Zambia, His Excellency, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda.
The Nursing and Midwifery Triad comprises three institutions namely the ZUNO, DNMS of the Ministry of Health, and the NMCZ. The partnership enables the national nursing and midwifery leadership to work together for the improvement of professional regulation and practice in the country.
Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation (ZUNO) president Mrs. Tisa Meleka Chiponda stated that “Dr. Kaunda showed unwavering support to the growth of the professions, as was evident through his leadership in ensuring the introduction of male nurse training in the country”.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ), Registrar Mr. Aaron Banda has recalled Dr. Kaunda’ steadfast support towards shaping the Nursing and Midwifery legal framework in the country through the first independent legislation of nursing professionals in form of the Nurses and Midwives Act No. 51 of 1970.
“This Act enhanced professionalism in nursing, through which the late Dr. Kenneth Kaunda placed emphasis on human dignity, the supremacy of human life regardless of one’s social, economic or religious status and the need for nurses to be passionate about serving others”, He said.
And Department of Nursing and Midwifery Services (DNMS) Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services, Professor Lonia Mwape has stated that the Ministry of Health remains indebted to Dr. Kaunda for consistently supporting and establishing local capacity for health practitioner training and local health facilities respectively. This she said demonstrated that he was a pioneer and architect of the health infrastructure through the construction and establishment of various health facilities which included the University Teaching Hospital [UTH], the then Ndola and Kitwe Central hospitals, Provincial and District General hospitals country wide.
Dr Kaunda ruled Zambia from 1964 to 1991 as the country’s first President. He died on 17 June 2021 aged 97.
