The Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation (ZUNMO) joined national stakeholders in celebrating a historic milestone — the official launch of the Retired Nurses and Midwives Association of Zambia (RENMAZ) on 17 May 2025 at Southern Sun Hotel in Lusaka.

Representing ZUNMO Executive President Mr. Fray Michelo, General Secretary Mr. Martin Muloongo reaffirmed ZUNMO’s unwavering support for the new Association.

In his address, Mr. Muloongo highlighted that ZUNMO has long desired to see a structured and organized platform for retired nurses and midwives — individuals who have spent decades contributing to Zambia’s healthcare sector under various organizational transformations, from ZNA to ZUNO and now ZUNMO.

“This is not just the launch of an association; it is the birth of a home — a space that recognizes, honors, and engages those who built the foundation of our profession,” he said. “You are mentors, advocates, and custodians of wisdom.”

The ceremony was graced by Republican Vice-President Mutale Nalumango, represented by Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Hon. Elias Mubanga. In her speech, the Vice-President urged retired nurses and midwives to support the government’s efforts in preventive health education, particularly in addressing early marriages, promoting adolescent health, and strengthening community health awareness.

ZUNMO acknowledged the importance of this partnership, pledging continued collaboration in joint activities, information sharing, and welfare initiatives.

The event concluded on a note of unity, respect, and vision, with a shared commitment to preserve the legacy of Zambia’s nursing and midwifery pioneers.
